Hawthorn Elixir is a tincture of hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha), 190 proof Everclear, vegetable glycerine and filtered water. Hawthorn’s medicinal qualities come from the bioflavonoids and the proanthocyanin present in the plant’s chemical makeup. These two constituents relax and dilate the arteries which increases flow of blood to the heart and thus possibly reducing the symptoms of angina. These powerhouse chemicals are both antioxidants which can help the blood vessels from degeneration. This herb has been used throughout history and has in recent times been studied several times over with positive findings in its ability to lower blood pressure and support the overall function of the heart. Combined with Gingko, hawthorn has shown abilities in memory enhancement by increasing blood flow to the head which in turn increased oxygen to the brain. In Europe hawthorn was traditionally used to bladder stones, kidney issues and as a diuretic with famous practitioners such as Gerard and Culpeper citing this effect.
