Description
Rough Cough: Gentle Chest Rub for Easier Breathing
Why I Made This
When my daughter was a baby, I created a softer version of this salve. I kept the dilution low and chose the safest oils I could find. It worked beautifully for her, and I knew other mothers would appreciate having a natural option on hand. That’s how Rough Cough was born.
What’s Inside
I start with a base of coconut oil (Cocos nucifera), shea butter (Vitellaria paradoxa), and beeswax (Cera alba). These ingredients keep the salve smooth, nourishing, and gentle on sensitive skin. They also help the essential oils absorb slowly, reducing the chance of irritation.
For the respiratory support, I use:
- Fir needle (Abies sibirica) and lemon eucalyptus (Corymbia citriodora) – Their crisp, camphor-like aroma helps open the airways.
- Niaouli (Melaleuca quinquenervia) and cajeput (Melaleuca cajuputi) – Traditionally used to ease congestion and support the respiratory tract.
- Tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) – Known for its antibacterial properties.
- Peru balsam (Myroxylon balsamum) – Adds a warm, sweet scent that comforts and calms little ones.
The Tradition and Science
For centuries, mothers have turned to these herbs and resins to comfort children during coughs and congestion. Modern research now confirms that oils like eucalyptus lemon and niaouli contain compounds that can support easier breathing and have antimicrobial effects. I love that this blend marries folk wisdom with today’s science in a safe way.
How I Use It
I apply Rough Cough to the chest and back before bed or whenever my child needs a little relief. It helps calm the cough and encourages rest. I never recommend essential oils for babies, so I encourage parents to use their own research and experience when deciding what feels right for their family.
Pairing Suggestions
Rough Cough pairs beautifully with Relaxy Bath, Peppermint Bark, and the Airline Antigen Inhaler for a full circle of comfort.
