I wanted to use up my self grown and harvested chickweed oil for a few different things and I already used it in a salve so my next idea was an oil for the scalp. After research and intuition I realized it is an excellent infused oil for the scalp. With the added benefits of Rosemary & Clary Sage it can truly heal the scalp and has the possibility to aid in hair growth. This blend will also be good added to a castor oil pack and when used on the scalp has the added bonus of relieving a headache. Using something naturally derived over time has a better long term result than say taking Biotin regularly. Biotin can have adverse effects on your thyroid, kidneys and skin.
Chickweed
Chickweed (Stellaria media) was probably growing all over your yard this year. It is 100% edible and medicinal. Culpepper, speaking my passive aggressive language here, wrote “It is so generally known to most people, that I shall not trouble you with the description thereof, nor myself…” Love that. “…apply to the region of the liver, and as they dry, to have it fresh applied, doth wonderfully temperate the heat of the liver…” This has led me to suggesting this scalp oil be mixed into the castor oil packs for the liver. My Native book for herbalogy says “the awareness of this creation for bodily correction is qualified for liver ailments.” I love dual purpose products. Chickweed is renowned to soothe itchiness and is widely used to relieve eczema, varicose veins, ulcers and nettle rash. The saponins may account for the herb’s ability to help reduce itchiness.
Clary Sage
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea) was commonly known to treat eye problems and thus was also known as “clear eye”. In the middle ages it was referred to as ‘Oculus Christi’ meaning eye of Christ because of how clear-headed it can make you. Clary Sage is normally an herb I recommend for hormonal and female issues however it appears to possess some cell regenerating properties particularly in the scalp. It can encourage hair growth and is capable of clearing greasy hair and reducing dandruff by controlling excess sebum.
Rosemary
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is one of my favorite herbs, in fact I did my 8 page research paper on it. Rosemary has so many uses but for this blend I used it for its chemical constituents of carnosic acid and carnosol for being so stimulating to nerve growth. Since it promotes blood to the head it is thought that rosemary can relieve migraines and encourage hair growth. It promotes healthy circulation. My directory of essential oils notes that it “clears headaches and migraines especially when connected to gastric problems. Is a nerve stimulant and may be helpful for vertigo…Acts as a liver decongestant…” and “…it is a strong astringent for toning and binding with stimulating action that has been found to benefit scalp disorders and could alleviate dandruff and encourage hair growth.”
