Follicle Frenzy: A Multi-Tasking Herbal Remedy
A Natural Blend for Hair Growth, Scalp Health, and Headache Relief
Why I Made It
After using up some of my homegrown, solar-infused chickweed oil in a salve, I wanted to give this green ally a new purpose. After some research—and a little herbal intuition—I crafted a nourishing scalp oil using Chickweed (Stellaria media), Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea), and Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis).
The result? A deeply healing, multitasking oil that supports scalp health, encourages hair growth, and even helps relieve headaches. It also makes a great addition to castor oil packs, especially those applied to the liver area.
Unlike synthetic supplements like biotin—which can have unwanted side effects on the thyroid, kidneys, or skin—this natural scalp oil works gently over time to support your body’s own healing mechanisms.
Chickweed (Stellaria media)
Chickweed is likely growing wild in your yard each spring. It’s 100% edible, medicinal, and historically loved by herbalists like Culpepper, who quipped:
“It is so generally known… I shall not trouble you with the description thereof, nor myself.”
Traditionally applied to the liver, chickweed has long been used to cool internal inflammation—a connection that led me to recommend this oil blend for use with castor oil liver packs.
Herbal actions of chickweed:
- Soothes itchiness and irritation
- Used for eczema, nettle rash, varicose veins, and skin ulcers
- Contains saponins, which support the herb’s anti-inflammatory and cooling properties
Clary Sage (Salvia sclarea)
Known in the Middle Ages as “Oculus Christi” or “Eye of Christ”, Clary Sage was traditionally used to clear the mind and eyes. Today, it’s one of my favorite herbs for:
- Hormonal balance
- Excess sebum and dandruff
- Scalp regeneration and hair growth
It helps clear greasy buildup, reduce flakes, and stimulate new hair follicles, making it a perfect addition to any scalp blend—especially for stressed or sluggish skin.
Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis)
My favorite herb, and the subject of my own 8-page research paper, Rosemary is rich in compounds like carnosic acid and carnosol, known to:
- Stimulate nerve growth
- Promote circulation to the scalp
- Relieve migraines and tension headaches
- Act as an astringent to tone and rebalance oily or inflamed skin
It’s also a liver decongestant, which ties back beautifully to the idea of using this oil in combination with liver-supporting castor oil therapy.
How to Use This Herbal Scalp Oil
- Massage directly into the scalp before bed for nourishment and headache relief
- Combine with a warm castor oil pack over the liver to support detox and hormonal balance
- Use regularly to stimulate hair follicles, balance sebum, and soothe dry or itchy skin
