Scar Oil – What Is It?
My Scar Oil came about over 10. years ago when a friend asked me to help her with an old scar. I blended and mixed and came up with my beloved Tamanu Boo-boo. It is much more mild and safe for children. I knew I needed something stronger for adults so the Scar Oil was born. *This recipe contains lemon essential oil making it sun sensitive. Do not allow the sun to reach that area of application withing 12 hours of use.
What Makes it Work?
The Three Wisemen of the Carrier Oils
Scar Oil uses three main carrier oils known for their possible cicatrisant properties: Tamanu, Jojoba, & Rosehip.
Tamanu (Calophyllum inophyllum) – contains a unique fatty acid called calophyllic acid, and antibiotic lactone and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent called calophyllolide. These and other constituents of tamanu oil, including anti-inflammatory coumarins, account for some of the oil’s beneficial activity.
Rosehip (Rosa canina) – is rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants. Its vitamin C and E content contributes to brightening the complexion and promoting collagen synthesis. Rosehip is also anti-inflammatory and antioxidant making it effective in soothing and protecting the skin from outside/inside stressors.
Jojoba (Simmondsia chinensis) – “Extensive studies on Jojoba oil showed a wide range of pharmacological applications, including antioxidant, anti-acne and antipsoriasis, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antipyretic, analgesic, antimicrobial, and anti-hyperglycemia activities. In addition, Jojoba oil is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry, especially in cosmetics for topical, transdermal, and parenteral preparations.” Jojoba is widely regarded as one of the plant oils that most closely resembles our own natural sebum therefore allowing the body to absorb it properly and fully. https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8197201/
The Add Ons
Vitamin E – acts as a powerful antioxidant to protect cells and creates a protective barrier.
Lemon (Citrus limon)Â – contains natural acids and alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) that help shed dead skin cells from the upper layers of the skin, gradually blending the scar tissue with normal skin tone.
Helichrysum (Helichrysum italicum) – is the band-aid of the oil world. This must have oil stimulates the growth and movement of fibroblasts (cells that rebuild tissue) and skin stem cells to repair damaged layers. This is the cicatrisant constituent.
Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) – encourages new cell growth, reducing inflammation, and supporting skin remodeling.
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) – increases the expression of type I and type III collagen, which are key structural proteins the body uses to repair broken skin.
