Stocking Up on Adaptogens

It is that time of year again to stock up on adaptogens to get us through the darker and colder months (except for here in Texas 🥵). When the days shorten and the air cools (for most of you, anyway), our bodies need extra support to stay balanced, energized, and resilient. That’s where adaptogens shine.

What Exactly Are Adaptogens?

“Adaptogen” is a fairly new buzzword in the herbal community. You won’t find it in your older herbals or tucked away in dusty dictionaries. These plants, roots, and mushrooms are celebrated today because they help restore vitality, support wellness, and build resilience in the face of stress.

The funny thing is: most of these herbs have been used for centuries in traditional medicine. They just didn’t wear the adaptogen label back then. Instead, you’d find them classified as tonics, bitters, or stimulants—sometimes all three at once. For example, humble dandelion is a bitter and a tonic, but it also carries mild adaptogenic traits.

What Adaptogens Can Do for You

These herbal allies are multitaskers in the best way. They can:

  • Restore balance
  • Increase energy
  • Improve stamina
  • Boost immune response
  • Support homeostasis
  • Enhance brain and memory function
  • Normalize overall body energy and health

Basically, they’re nature’s version of a reset button.

But How Do They Work?

People love to talk about the benefits of adaptogens, but not everyone explains the how. Let me break it down:

  • They help enzymes transform glucose into usable energy
  • They activate the synthesis of proteins and nucleic acids
  • They strengthen immune health through a variety of mechanisms
  • They’re antioxidant rich, limiting free radicals (those pesky troublemakers behind age-related disease)
  • They support the endocrine glands and positively influence the pituitary, hypothalamus, and adrenal glands

This last point is especially important—adaptogens have a balancing effect on hormone production. That’s why they’re so supportive during menopause and the transition into croneship.

Safe… With a Few Exceptions

Generally speaking, adaptogens are considered safe with little to no side effects. That said, there are always exceptions to the rule. I know this firsthand.

Take ashwagandha, for example. People rave about its calming effects, but for me, it has the opposite reaction—my heart races instead of mellowing out. Just like with vitex, it doesn’t play nice with my system.

This is where the wisdom of experience comes in. Years of learning, experimenting, and practicing as an herbalist and apothecary owner have taught me that plants, like people, don’t always act the same way in every body.

Why I Keep Turning Back to Them

Despite the quirks and exceptions, adaptogens remain some of my favorite herbal allies to lean on when life gets stressful and the seasons shift. They remind me that balance, energy, and resilience aren’t just things we wish for—they’re things we can nurture with the right support.

And lucky for us, nature already provided the tools.
