Magnesium The Mighty
Why This Ancient Mineral Still Deserves a Place in Your Daily Routine
A Long History of Healing
Magnesium has played a key role in natural medicine for centuries. First discovered in the healing salt springs of Epsom, England in 1695, this essential mineral supports almost every system in the body. Magnesium deficiency has been linked to a variety of chronic conditions, including:
- Heart disease
- Stroke
- Arthritis
- Osteoporosis
- Chronic fatigue
- Digestive issues
- Anxiety and depression
Why Magnesium Matters
As Dr. Mark Sircus explains:
“Without magnesium chloride, the human body would be unable to maintain fluids in blood vessels, conduct nerve transmissions, move muscles, or maintain proper kidney function.”
This makes magnesium chloride one of the most powerful and fast-acting forms for topical application. Internally, magnesium is involved in:
- Metabolic regulation
- Blood pressure control
- Calcium absorption
- Sleep support
- Blood sugar balance
Sleep disorders such as insomnia, night terrors, sleepwalking, and teeth grinding are often tied to low magnesium levels. For people with diabetes, it may help regulate blood glucose as well.
Types of Magnesium We Use
Magnesium Chloride (MgClâ‚‚)
Also known as magnesium brine, oil, or flakes, this form is highly absorbable through the skin. First used by Pierre Delbet in WWI as an antiseptic, it’s still favored for topical uses like:
- Sleep support
- Muscle tension
- Menstrual relief
Magnesium Sulfate (MgSOâ‚„)
Better known as Epsom salts, this folk remedy is wonderful for:
- Detoxifying soaks
- Sore muscle relief
- Stress reduction
While beneficial, magnesium sulfate is more rapidly excreted and not absorbed as efficiently as chloride. That’s why I save it for deep bath rituals, not daily use.
Our Daily Magnesium Routine
In our home, we’ve integrated both types of magnesium in ways that support body and spirit:
Magnesium Chloride
- Nighttime sleep roller
- Menstrual pain relief blend
Magnesium Sulfate
- Long, relaxing detox baths
Soak in 2 cups of Epsom salts for 40 minutes—20 minutes to draw out toxins, and 20 to replenish minerals.
I often enhance these baths with baking soda and pink Himalayan salt (available in my shop).
For internal support, we rotate between:
- Magnesium Oxide in the morning
- Magnesium Glycinate at night
- Magnesium Hydroxide from Crucial Four
Natural Food Sources of Magnesium
Boost your levels with magnesium-rich greens, including:
- Spinach
- Seaweed
- Kale
- Swiss chard
- Broccoli
- Brussels sprouts
- Bok choy
- Turnip greens
